ENGINEERED FOR EXTREME SNOW LOADS
Authentic heavy timber framing is an ancient architectural art form that relies on massive solid wood beams and complex wooden joinery. Instead of relying purely on exposed metal brackets, we utilize traditional mortise and tenon techniques secured with hardwood pegs. This creates a massive load bearing structure fully capable of withstanding the most extreme winter weather and heavy snow loads Fernie and Kimberley can produce. The result is a home that breathes, flexes naturally, and stands absolutely rock solid for generations.

THREE WAYS TO INTEGRATE HEAVY TIMBER

FULL STRUCTURAL FRAMES
The ultimate mountain lodge experience. The entire structural skeleton of the home is crafted from massive timbers, leaving the beautiful wooden framework completely exposed on the interior.

HYBRID ARCHITECTURE
The perfect balance of modern efficiency and rustic warmth. We utilize standard conventional framing for the walls but integrate massive heavy timber roof systems and great room accents.

EXTERIOR WOOD ACCENTS
Instantly elevate your curb appeal. We design and install massive structural timber trusses and dramatic covered entryways that give any home that premium Kootenay aesthetic.
PREMIUM BRITISH COLUMBIA WOOD
A timber frame is only as strong as the wood it is cut from. The Dudley family partners exclusively with top tier local mills to source premium grade British Columbia Douglas Fir and Western Red Cedar. Every single massive beam is meticulously inspected for structural integrity, exact moisture content, and breathtaking visual character before it ever arrives at your Kootenay build site.
COMMONLY ASKED QUESTIONS
Everything you need to know about building with DCB Construction in the East Kootenays.
How much maintenance do exterior timber accents require?
Heavy wood exposed to intense Kootenay weather does need protection. We apply premium penetrating oils that seal the grain while allowing the wood to naturally breathe. We recommend a simple visual inspection every spring and a fresh coat of oil every few years, depending on direct sun exposure, to keep your exterior trusses and entryways looking pristine.
Can you add heavy timber accents to an existing house?
Absolutely. You do not need to build a brand new custom home to get that luxury mountain aesthetic. We can expertly retrofit massive timber front entryways, custom gable trusses, and heavy wooden deck supports to completely transform the curb appeal of your current property.
Is a full timber frame home energy efficient?
They are incredibly efficient. When paired with modern high performance wall systems or structural insulated panels, the massive wooden beams actually help regulate your interior temperature. You get the breathtaking rustic beauty of exposed wood on the inside and absolute airtight winter efficiency on the outside.
Will the massive wooden beams crack or twist over time?
Some natural checking and minor surface cracking is a completely normal part of the wood curing process and actually adds to the authentic rustic character of the home. However, because we strictly source premium grade British Columbia Douglas Fir and lock the beams together with traditional wooden joinery, the absolute structural integrity of the frame remains rock solid for generations.
